December 27th marks a poignant anniversary for Serenity Renewal for Families. On this day, we honour the life and legacy of Sister Louise Dunn, C.N.D., our co-founder and an extraordinary woman whose compassion and vision transformed the lives of over 100,000 individuals and families.
Sister Louise dedicated 36 years to counselling and supporting those affected by addiction. She firmly believed that addiction is not just an individual struggle but a challenge that deeply impacts families. Her unwavering commitment ensured that Serenity Renewal for Families became a beacon of hope, where no one was turned away due to financial barriers.
In her words, “I am a woman of hope.” These words encapsulate her life’s mission—helping others find resilience, healing, and strength in the face of adversity.
Her Journey of Service
Sister Louise’s path to becoming a pioneer in addiction recovery was both unique and inspiring. Starting her career as a teacher, she became acutely aware of the struggles her students and their families faced due to addiction. At the age of 48, driven by a deep desire to make a difference, she transitioned into counselling. She trained at the renowned Hazelden Institute in Minnesota, equipping herself with the tools and knowledge to bring about lasting change.
In 1983, she co-founded Serenity Renewal for Families with a revolutionary vision: addiction recovery must include families who are equally affected. Sister Louise worked tirelessly, devoting herself to counselling and advocacy well into her 80s. Her approach blended wisdom, compassion, and a touch of joy—she was known to hum uplifting tunes as she welcomed clients.
As one colleague fondly recalled, “When people entered her office, they left not only with her advice but with the strength to believe in themselves again.”
A Legacy That Lives On
Although Sister Louise is no longer with us, her mission and values remain the foundation of Serenity Renewal for Families. We continue to provide accessible counselling, educational workshops, and family programs to help those in need, always guided by her principles of hope, respect, and community.
As we remember Sister Louise this year, we invite you to help us carry forward her legacy. Together, we can ensure that Serenity Renewal for Families remains a sanctuary of healing for generations to come.
